ㅤACTㅤ01 :ㅤINTRO .ㅤㅤitsukushima, a place shrouded in mystery; a place wherein day and night rotated the longest ─ 9 years of light, and 9 years of darkness: making the netherforce of the monsters stronger, hence it becomes harder for the inhabitants to survive, as they weaken and as they wilt.it is an island both blessed and cursed by the gods for they have given them strict laws and calendars which are strictly followed by melody tuners who play the ritual song to usher the dawn after the long night. but if they try to break the divine rules and attempt to perform the ritual before the right moment comes, eternal night will descend and engulf the island in its cold and lightless obscurity forever. and such a day did come ...in order to save the youngest of the clan of musician who suffers from critical condition, the melody tuner called forth the day before the cycle of the night even ended. and thus the sun never shines 'pon the island ever again and nightly aramitama rises.
ㅤACTㅤ02 :ㅤCHORUS .ㅤㅤborn in the dark, raised in the dark. she catches a glimpse of the day when she is naught but a toddler ─ two years old ─ but afterwards, the dark heavens are everything she witnesses: all her life, all she sees are darkness and a never-ending bloodbath.after inheriting the divine lute, she practices day and night, until her fingers bleed and peeled off, until her voice becomes hoarse ─ and yet, despite her efforts to bring the dawn and end the eternal night, countless people still die. and time cannot stop; every year, she loses someone: her parents, her sisters, her grandfather, and her brothers until she's the only one that remains to protect itsukushima and its people. until she's the only one left alone to play in the darkness.ㅤand eventually, the high walls finally begin to crumble ─ monsters of the night breaching and coming closer. she can do nothing even when she tries to bend the fate of her people as the demons continue to slay all life in the island.
ㅤACTㅤ03 :ㅤCODA .ㅤㅤamidst despair and doom, she was saved by the melody tuner before her ─ who cursed the island: her eldest sister, ritsu. her sister, existence neither living nor dead, told her the truth that day. it turns out that she was the origin of this sin ... because of her ... her people suffered and died because of her.taking her hand, ritsu's soul becomes one with the lute and plays the last song with her. thus, she plays, calling forth departed souls, their spirits infusing within genjo. and in order to finally put an end to this bloody tragedy, she surrenders her mortal body, and in her death, she emerges and reborns into a celestial musician: maker of laws, and maestra of tunes. dawn finally welcomes itsukushima, as she bids farewell to her home, to what she holds dear, and to the night.for many years, within the holy lute, the goddess and nightly aramitama were imprisoned together. for many years itsukushima flourishes. for many years, she was forgotten.
GRANDPA USED TO TELL ME THERE'S MUSIC IN EVERYTHING, and that my performance should resonate with my audience's soul. so i listened carefully to the world. i listened to the delicate flickering of candle flames, to the serene trickling of streams, to the rustling of the trees' shadows, and to the lovely bird songs. i learned everything from him, from the most ancient music theories to the most ingenious techniques. during those days, grandpa loved to take me out on trips. walking in the never-ending night of itsukushima, i was a child exploring the world for the first time, appreciating and listening to everything around me wholeheartedly. and grandpa would always follow me slowly, giving me advice from time to time. come to think of it, those long roads grandpa walked with me have become some of the rare cherished moments in my life.guided by grandpa, i've been honing my skills. and then one day, when our family was sitting in the courtyard, i played the genjo lute as usual, but the strings glimmered and a tiny flock of birds flew out, like fireflies illuminating the night. the flock fluttered nimbly around the lute, as if they could understand the sound. surprised, i raised a hand to dismiss them. they understood my feelings, and began to dance up and down in the air accompanying my hand's movement. that was the time i first saw approval on grandpa's stern face.grandpa told me that they were melo-birds, spiritual creatures born from music. unlike lesser spirits, melo-birds don't really have their own consciousness, but move in rhythm with the performer's heart. if the music shines with virtuosity, the flock moves with great power. the manifestation of the melo-birds indicates that my performance on the genjo has grown even further refined. perhaps one day, i would be able to summon thousands of melo-birds from the music in everything around me, even without the help of my lute. maybe then, itsukushima would finally welcome its dawn.melo-birds are born from music and soar into the light. i was only able to see the first half, but grandpa patted me on the shoulder solemnly, as if he was expecting to see me unleash their full potential. he told vivid tales of the legendary feat of the chorus of the sun, to which i listened with a naive longing, imagining an epic performance, as the melo-birds fluttered gleefully alongside my drifting thoughts.pushing open the courtyard gate, mikoto-niisan saw the scene and a long-lost smile appeared on his worn-out face. nodoka-neesan gazed at the melo-birds intently. mitsuru-niisan approached, amazed. it has long been since my family sat together like this. feeling invigorated, i played with yet more enthusiasm. the tails of the melo-birds were just a shimmer, but everyone watched them with bated breath. the pale golden light was within my reach, as was our hope, i believed. surrounded by everyone and sensing their trust, i felt a determination taking root in me like never before.for the sake of my loved ones, i practiced more and more. days, nights ... but no amount of effort could stop time from taking away my family. grandpa, mikoto-niisan, nodoka-neesan, mitsuru-niisan ... one by one, they left me behind. i played the lute in the dark night by myself, as the melo-birds, manifested from the strings, overflowed with spiritual
power and shed a bright golden light in the courtyard. i imagined the joyful faces of my family ... if only they could've seen my progress. but they would never again be with me, nor listen to my performance.grandpa once told me, the chorus of the sun can only be achieved by the most accomplished melody tuner. the past war has transformed me into a maestra of tunes with the power of altering the rules to my will, bringing everlasting light to itsukushima with my performance. even though the chorus of the sun was no longer a feat beyond my capabilities, i still had never attempted it.i recently lived in heian-kyo. michitsuna was sick. the more fragile a human being feels, the more nostalgic they seem to become. he's been thinking about itsukushima a lot lately, and i've also thought about going back to visit. one spring night, we headed back to that serene place. our boat docked under the dawn sky, accompanied by a backdrop of distant mountains shrouded in shimmering mist. we saw a flock of birds fly over. it was daybreak. the flock of birds reminded me of the legends of the chorus of the sun. as i started to sing that familiar melody, i felt a spiritual power swelling in my body. the strings of everything between heaven and earth vibrated in resonance with my voice ─ my performance no longer relied on the genjo lute. countless golden melo-birds sprang to life from the music in everything. the sky became brighter as the melo-birds flocked, outlining a long trail of light along the horizon. my mind followed the birds to the highest point in the sky, then beyond the dark clouds, from where i gazed down at the dawn of itsukushima. the legend came to life before my eyes: melo-birds soared in the sky to the chorus of the sun, illuminating all things on earth in their wake. itsukushima bathed in the first rays of dawn before countless beams of light lit up the world below ─ beneath the melo-birds, beneath the boundless sea of light ─ and i saw the melo-birds piece together tiny memories of life, the fragments of the past they carried.in the everlasting night, the melo-birds accompanied my music-making in the dark; throughout the chaos of war, the melo-birds kept watch with me every dawn. they were mere freckles of light, but they briefly carried a glimmer of light to me and my family. now, with full power unleashed, they gathered around the same place this place where the light shines the brightest. grandpa's words sprang into my mind. "melo-birds are born from the music, and soar into the light. that was always the meaning of their existence."light was not the only thing the melo-birds brought to this world. my family's hopes, together with those of itsukushima people, were also carried on their wings. what i had called forward wasn't just birds ─ these creatures were manifestations of the longing for light, which every living being on itsukushima possessed. now, the melo-birds had completed their true mission, as they soared towards the light, carrying the unfulfilled wishes of my loved ones. myriads of melo-birds continued to manifest as i sang in the light. it was then that i finally realized that i was no longer alone. every single time the melo-birds would be reborn with my performance, and they would bring the music of my lost loved ones back to me. the melo-birds' light will not die out in my lifetime, not so long as my family, my people, and myself ─ though separated by distance ─ can still guard it together.
Against the setting sun is a prayer for the brightness to last into eternity.
